The current automotive industry faces numerous challenges,
including increased global competition, more stringent
environmental and safety requirements, the need for higher
performance vehicles, and reducing costs. The materials used in
automotive engineering play key roles in overcoming these issues.
Automotive Engineering: Lightweight, Functional, and Novel
Materials focuses on both existing materials and future
developments in automotive science and technology. Divided into
four sections, the book first describes the development of future
vehicles, aluminum alloys for manufacturing lighter body panels,
and various polymer composites for stronger module carriers. It
then reviews state-of-the-art functional materials and smart
technologies and projects in which application areas they will most
impact future automotive designs and manufacturing. The next
section considers the difficulties that must be overcome for light
alloys to displace ferrous-based materials and the increasing
competition from lightweight polymeric-based composites. The final
section explores newer processing and manufacturing technologies,
including welding and joining, titanium alloys, and durable,
high-performance composites. With contributions from
internationally recognized experts, this volume provides a
comprehensive overview of cutting-edge automotive materials and
technologies. It will help you understand the key materials and
engineering concerns currently confronting this industry.
Is there a growing gap in today 's world between cultural
aspirations and their fulfillment, a gap that is increasing social
problems of all kinds? If so, what forces are producing that gap?
How can these forces be changed? To answer these questions, Phillips
and Johnston employ a very broad approach to the scientific method,
drawing evidence from a wide variety of data and sources, including
sociologists, psychologists, political scientists, historians,
philosophers, educators, psychiatrists, and novelists. They find
substantial evidence for a widening gap, suggesting an invisible
crisis throughout contemporary society. They also find substantial
evidence that a simplistic and static metaphysical stance or
worldview is largely responsible for that gap, and that an
alternative worldview can work to close that gap.

Kraepelin, who in 1896 first defined the disorder now known as
schizophrenia, appreciated that there were many difficulties with
the concept, and believed that, since the cause of the disorder was
essentially unknown, there could be no rational treatment. This
authoritative 1999 text provides a wide-ranging survey of the
disorder, including an extensive account of what was known about
the underlying biology. The main part of the book covers clinical
aspects, including differential and dual diagnosis, and treatment
and management problems, particularly in relation to care in the
community. Topics covered include brain imaging, genetics,
pharmacology and neuropsychology, as well as chapters on health
economics and forensic issues. The authors have extensive clinical
experience with schizophrenia patients, and this book, which is
unusual in its breadth and its concern for social and community
issues, will be a valuable reference for all psychiatrists, and
other health professionals involved in the management of
schizophrenia.
This book is a comprehensive exposition of the thermodynamic
properties of the van der Waals fluid, which evolved out of a
course on thermodynamics and statistical mechanics at Iowa State
University in the US. The main goal of the book is to provide a
graphical overview of the many interesting and diverse
thermodynamic properties of the van der Waals fluid through plots
of these properties versus various independent parameters. The data
for these plots are obtained from formulas derived herein, some of
which have previously appeared in the literature. Many results not
amenable to graphical illustration are also included. This book
will be useful to instructors as a teaching resource and to
students as a text supplement of thermodynamics and statistical
mechanics courses, as well as to others who are interested in the
thermodynamics of the seminal van der Waals fluid.
REVIEWS What people are saying... "This is a remarkable book in
every way. Beautifully written, full of real emotion, it made me
laugh out loud and brought me to tears." "I am reeling from the
power of this book. Really great writing, and very very funny...
Ollie is the new 'Adrian Mole' but with so many more dimensions. It
says this book is written for above 12s, I can inform you that I am
42 and I was immersed and challenged at the same time." "I was
stunned by this book... one of the most intelligent books I have
ever read (for any age group )" " I was really taken by the
original and clever voice... I was actually quite blown away." "A
beautifully written story... I empathised with every one of the
characters but really it is Oliver who you cannot help but love.
Thank goodness for Kamal, his whacky friend, who made me laugh out
loud and Poppy, the focus of his adoration. A book every teenager
and parent should read." "It was an emotional rollercoaster of a
ride but in a good way... the realism of the characters made me
care about them all..." "Julia Johnston has written a beautiful,
funny and thought-provoking book... I am a school librarian who has
recommended this to a number of teenage readers and they have all
loved it." "Poignant, clever, excellent characterisation, sad and
yet still funny." "Though aimed at teenagers this is a book for
everyone who likes books about life and a good story - funny, sad
and charming. The loveable if sometimes difficult Ollie takes us
through life from the time his younger sister becomes seriously
ill. Friend Kamal and "angst causing" love interest Poppy join the
irresistible cast of characters that make up Ollie's family. I
lived, worried, laughed and cried with Ollie. Julia writes with an
appealing, amusing and intelligent voice that keeps you turning the
pages late into the night... am still missing Ollie and friends."
DESCRIPTION Ollie is drowning. No one notices.
Oliver Campbell, fourteen, fanciful and funny in equal measure,
struggles to unravel the knots of emotion when his little sister,
Lily, falls gravely ill with a mysterious disease. Irritating and
puzzling to his two older half-brothers, neglected by his
self-absorbed mum and dad, and unfalleninlovewith by Poppy
Teasdale, he longs to be something more than invisible.
Quirky Kamal doesn't think it's weird that Ollie, his best friend,
is fascinated by words and plants; he knows what it's like to be
different and to be bullied; he coaches him on love, and how to
clinch his dream-girl; he tickles him with his highfalutin language
and aspirations; he impresses him with his fortitude despite a
tragic past; he is there when his life takes a terrible turn; he is
loyal to the end.
Ollie's two special people throw him life jackets, but will they
be enough to save him...?
Readers who savoured Jenny Valentine's "Broken Soup," Frank
Cottrell Boyce's "Framed," and Joe Dunthorne's "Submarine" might
also approve of my novel for the 12+ age group, which I hope will
appeal to boys, girls and adults alike.
